Masters
Swimming is an organized program of swimming for adults. Members
participate in a variety of ways ranging from lap swimming to international
competition.
Anyone
18 years and older can join regardless of swimming ability and skill
level. United States Masters Swimming (USMS) has over 30,000
members nationwide.
WSU
Masters Swimming requires that all members be registered with United
States Masters Swimming (USMS). In our area the Local Masters Swimming
Committee (LMSC) representing USMS is Inland Northwest Masters.
The benefits of registering with USMS/Inland Northwest Masters Swimming
are:
- USMS
Swimmer Magazine, the official publication of United States
Masters Swimming. Content is directly related to swimming for
adults.
- The
Splashmaster Newsletter, the official publication of Inland
Northwest Masters Swimming. Announces local swimming related events
- Secondary
insurance coverage, which covers all WSU Masters workouts and
events where everyone is USMS registered.
- Opportunity
to participate in local, national, and international competitions
as well as open water swims and clinics. Talk with the on-deck
coach for registration information or visit How
to Join and download a pdf or our registration forms (WSU
students under 18 years old can still participate. Please talk
to the coach about special accommodation).
Why
WSU Masters Swimming?
The focus of WSU
Masters is structured fitness swimming workouts. These workouts differ
from a traditional open lap swim in that we provide on-deck coaching
that includes:
- stroke
technique instruction
- set
design
- traffic
monitoring.
Because our
workouts are structured we ask that you do the workout as prescribed
by the coach. It is the job of the coach to adapt the workout to
your needs, while keeping the group as a whole moving in the same
general direction. If you have an injury that prevents you from
doing a particular stroke, please let the coach know so that he/she
can change the workout for your needs.
Most workouts take place in Gibb Pool which is in the Physical Education
Building on the Washington State University campus. Occasionally
workouts take place in Smith Pool or at the Pullman Aquatic Center
near Pullman High School. Because our organization is open to everyone
in the community and the Student Recreation Center is restricted
to students or member use only, none of our workouts take place
at the Student Recreation Center.
Workouts are provided in the early morning and in the evening. The
schedule and location changes from time-to-time, be sure to review
the Schedule
& Location section of this site for more detailed
information.
