The best way
to join WSU Masters Swimming is to visit the University Recreation Web site and register, then show up at practice.
If you're unfamiliar with the sport of swimming and how a typical swim practice might run, we encourage you to come to a practice to observe and to speak with a coach.
Swim Requirements: Because we are not a learn to swim program, as a guideline we ask that participants be able to swim 100 yards within 2:30 or 500 yards under 14:00.
United States Masters Swimming: We encourage all participants in WSU Masters to be registered with United States Masters Swimming. Membership is based on the calendar year, and includes a subscription to Swimmer magazine, the Splashmaster newsletter, and the opportunity to participate in meets and postal events.

1.
Go easy at your first workout,
even if you were a former competitive swimmer or are in great shape
through another sport. Don't feel obligated to swim the entire time
or every set. Give yourself and your body time to adjust.
2. Swim every other workout
at first if you're not in shape. Once again, don't push your body
too quickly.
3. Try different types of workouts.
We offer a variety of workouts, and it'll be good for you to see
what type of workout you prefer in addition to the time and place
that you like to swim.
4. Swim three times a week to
maintain cardiovascular fitness. This is the main reason why WSU
Masters maintains a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. To improve
fitness, it is necessary to swim at least four times a week. The
more you swim, the more physically fit you will become.
5. Fitness is a lifelong adult
pursuit. Being in shape is not always easy for adults, but
swimming is the safest and best way to achieve fitness. Every muscle
group is used and you don't have the shock of the ground as you
do in land based workouts. Don't enter this as a crash fitness program.
Improvement will be immediate and visible, but let your body gradually
adapt to this new aspect of your life. Also, don't be discouraged
if you miss a week of swimming. You will easily pick up where you
left off.
